Kathleen Manley Bio
Kathleen Manley admits she got a late start in the art world but twenty years later her oil landscapes capture her passion for her New England surroundings. An exhibition of her work entitled New England Views is being exhibited at the Emile A. Gruppe Gallery from July 3 through August 17, 2008. The public is invited to an Artist Reception on Sunday July 6, from 1-3.
Kathy grew up outside of Waltham, Ma. but was fortunate enough to spend a great deal of time in northern Vermont as both her parents grew up on dairy farms there. A great deal of her inspiration has come from the Vermont landscape. "I especially enjoy trying to capture the light and sense of place in my paintings. These scenes are quickly disappearing even in my own lifetime” says Kathy.
Using both palette knife and brush she has rendered bold strokes to preserve the image of fading barns and pastoral views of Vermont’s meadows and hills.
She has exhibited in juried shows at the Bryan Memorial Gallery in Jeffersonville, the Concord Art Association in Lexington Ma. and with the Northern Vermont Artist Association.

If you would like to have your Vermont art event posted here feel free to email me. I may also include it in my monthly e-newsletter for my framing business. Brought to you by the Village Frame Shoppe.

Missisquoi Wildlife Refuge Project

Daniel Pattullo, owner and framer at the Village Frame Shoppe, is a contributing photographer to the Missisquoi Wildlife Refuge Project.

St. Albans Artist Guild and the Friends of the Missisquoi National Wildlife Refuge present the Missisquoi National Wildlife Refuge Project. The Missisquoi Wildlife Refuge Project is a benefit project where member photographers of the Saint Albans Artists' Guild have captured images from the Missisquoi National Wildlife Refuge and then Member Artists from the Guild have produced artwork from these images.

The images and artwork will be used for the benefit of both the "Friends of the Missisquoi National Wildlife Refuge" and the "Saint Albans Artists' Guild" by way of an art exhibition & sale. The exhibit will feature our fine artists' and photographers' works created specifically for drawing attention to the wildlife and the natural beauty of the Missisquoi National Wildlife Refuge. Compositions are comprised of reflections of the wildlife; its waters; scenic landscape; or the artist's interpretation of these; not excluding abstract or contemporary works. There will be approximately 49 pieces of photographic imagery and painted artwork combined. All the works will be displayed in the halls of the Missisquoi National Wildlife Refuge building for a month-long exhibit beginning with a reception on June 28th. The reception is open to the public, so mark your calendars, tell your friends, and please join us for this wonderful event! The exhibit & reception will begin Saturday, June 28, 2008 from 2:00pm to 5:00pm.Reception: Saturday, June 28, 2008Time: 2:00PM - 5:00PMExhibit: June 28, 2008 through July 31, 2008Place: Missisquoi Wildlife Refuge, 29 Tabor Road, Swanton, Vermont

The St. Albans Artists' Guild is organized as an educational, not for profit corporation in the State of Vermont. The purposes of the corporation is to promote greater appreciation of art and artistic education and serve as a catalyst to promote cultural enrichment.

Artist to Artist by Harald Aksdal

Dan at the Village Frame Shoppe has offered me this space in his newsletter for sharing methods and techniques I've learned along the way. Ponder, test, use, or disregard anything here-stay with what "feels right" and augments your own work, but don't compromise. For this article, I'd like to briefly discuss composition. There are many good books on this subject and studying, along with practice, should be a part of every artist's routine. Here are two thoughts for your consideration: · A well-known artist once shared with me his definition of "composition" as "the orderly placement of things in a defined area." Think about that the next time you are laying out your work. Allow all those formulas for sky to land ratios, or diagonals, horizontals, verticals, and the golden mean, to fall into the background. Let those wonderful things support your "orderly placement of things in a defined area." · I was at a photographer's art show a while back. His subject matter was not out of the ordinary, but his pictures were very pleasing to look at because of his masterly use of composition. Later, we compared notes about composition; when I asked him his "secret," he said, "Cropping, Harald, cropping. When all else fails, crop it!" I know I've "cropped" a few of my watercolors, and the result has always improved the composition. Enjoy art! Next time, a few words about attitude, mindset, and how art is sometimes downright depressing.

Larson-Juhl is a top designer of moulding and is dedicated to quality picture framing. I am excited about this new moulding line from Larson Juhl! Larson Juhl has taken the colors and seasons of our beautiful state and packaged them into a special one-of-a kind frame collection called 'Vermont'. This photograph by photographer Dan Pattullo entitled "The Potter", was framed using a frame and matching fillet from this collection. The matting colors accent the aged look of this sepia toned photograph. The matting and mounting materials used are of the finest archival grade standards. To further preserve the photograph, we used Tru Vue Museum Glass. Museum Glass blocks out 98 percent of UV rays and eliminates the reflections that will be found when using standard glass without giving the fuzzy look of non-glare glass.

Come by the Village Frame Shoppe to see the 'Vermont' line and samples of Tru Vue's glass products.
